“Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” (transl. Commander) is a 2023 Telugu epic action film penned and directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur. The cast features Prabhas, Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, and others, depicting the gripping narrative set in the dystopian city-state of Khansaar. The storyline revolves around the unique friendship between Deva (Prabhas), a tribesman, and Varadha (Prithviraj), the prince of Khansaar. When faced with a looming coup d’état orchestrated by his father’s ministers and relatives, Varadha seeks Deva’s aid to secure his rule over Khansaar.
The film, announced officially in December 2020 as “Salaar” and later rebranded as “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” in July 2023, is the first installment of a two-part series. Principal photography commenced in January 2021, with filming spanning nearly three years across Telangana, Italy, and Budapest, wrapping up in late 2023. The production encountered challenges, including pandemic disruptions, reshoots, and VFX delays, leading to multiple release date postponements.
Released on December 22, 2023, in standard and IMAX formats, “Salaar: Part 1 – Ceasefire” received a mixed-to-positive reception from critics. Despite production hurdles, it emerged as a box office hit, grossing over ₹715 crore on a ₹270 crore budget. The film achieved the distinction of being the highest-grossing Telugu film of 2023 and the third highest-grossing Telugu film of all time, securing the 11th position among the highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
