Sarfira (transl. Crazy) is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by 2D Entertainment, Abundantia Entertainment, and Cape of Good Films. The film stars Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Radhika Madan. It is a remake of Kongara’s 2020 Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, which was itself based on G. R. The plot centers around Vir Jagannath Mhatre, a man from a small village in Maharashtra who dreams of launching an affordable airline for low-income families, overcoming various social and bureaucratic obstacles along the way.
Plot
The story follows Vir Jagannath Mhatre, an ambitious young man from a modest village. Vir’s goal is to create a budget airline that would make air travel accessible to the economically weaker sections of society. This dream leads him into conflict with powerful figures in the aviation industry and his own father, who believes in non-violent methods of social change, while Vir believes direct action is necessary.
Vir joins the Indian Air Force, but later leaves to pursue his airline dream, forming a team with two fellow trainees. He faces opposition from Paresh Goswami (played by Paresh Rawal), a wealthy aviation magnate who initially mocks Vir but later becomes his primary rival. Despite numerous setbacks caused by corruption, bureaucracy, and betrayals, Vir pushes forward with his airline concept, humorously referred to as an “udta hua Udupi hotel” (flying Udupi hotel). His wife, Rani (played by Radhika Madan), supports his vision while managing her own successful bakery, showcasing their strong partnership.
Development and Production
The Hindi remake was officially announced in July 2021, marking the debut of 2D Entertainment in the Hindi film industry. Originally referred to as Project 1, the film was directed by Sudha Kongara, the same director of Soorarai Pottru, and was co-produced with Abundantia Entertainment. After much speculation, Akshay Kumar was finalized as the lead actor, taking on the role originally played by Suriya. A ceremonial muhurat puja was held in Mumbai in April 2022 to commence the shooting. Paresh Rawal reprised his role from the original Tamil version.
Filming began in Mumbai on 25 April 2022, with additional shoots completed in various locations. Radhika Madan finished her portions by October 2022. The film’s music, composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, marks his second collaboration with Sudha Kongara and Akshay Kumar. The soundtrack includes guest composers Tanishk Bagchi and Suhit Abhyankar, with lyrics by Manoj Muntashir, Shloke Lal, and Tanishk Bagchi. The first song, “Maar Udi,” was released on 24 June 2024, followed by “Khudaya” on 27 June.
Release and Reception
The film was initially set to release on 1 September 2023, then postponed to 16 February 2024, before finally hitting theaters on 12 July 2024. It premiered on Disney+ Hotstar on 11 October 2024 for streaming.
Critically, Sarfira received mixed reviews. While Akshay Kumar’s performance was widely praised, critics had mixed reactions to other aspects of the film. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 42% rating, with some reviewers lauding its inspirational story and emotional core, while others criticized its melodrama and excessive use of background music.
Box Office
Despite the star power and hype around Akshay Kumar’s 150th film, Sarfira struggled at the box office. It grossed ₹2.5 crore on the opening day and ended up with a total domestic gross of ₹26.3 crore, with worldwide earnings of ₹30.02 crore, making it a box office disappointment. Analysts attributed the film’s underperformance to insufficient marketing and the fact that many viewers had already seen the original Tamil version online.
Critical Reviews
The film’s reception was divided:
- Bollywood Hungama gave the film 2.5/5, stating that “Akshay Kumar’s strong performance holds the film together despite some shortcomings.”
- News18 rated it 4.5/5, calling it “an inspiring tale retold beautifully with Akshay delivering his best in years.”
- India Today awarded it 4/5, praising Kumar’s “earnest and impactful performance.”
- Firstpost also gave it 4/5, calling it “an emotional rollercoaster that resonates deeply.”
However, some reviews were less favorable:
- Rediff.com rated it 2/5, criticizing the film for its over-the-top melodrama and unnecessary background score.
- Indian Express also gave it 2.5/5, pointing out that the film seemed more focused on showcasing Akshay Kumar than developing the other characters or themes.
In conclusion, while Sarfira tells a compelling story of perseverance and ambition, its mixed reviews and underwhelming box office performance suggest that it didn’t fully meet audience expectations. Nevertheless, Akshay Kumar’s portrayal of the determined and visionary Vir Jagannath Mhatre was widely regarded as a highlight.
