Critical Reception
“Raayan” received mixed reviews from critics, who praised Dhanush’s performance, the film’s cinematography, and A. R. Rahman’s music but criticized the film’s plot and the pacing of the second half. Divya Nair of Rediff gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, describing it as a “one-time watch” with elements catering to both the masses and critics. Rohit Panikker of Times Now echoed this sentiment, awarding the film 3.5 stars and noting that while the film’s violence might appeal to some, it could be exhausting for others.
M Suganth of The Times of India rated the film 3 out of 5 stars, highlighting the raw and rage-filled setting of the film but pointing out the vulnerabilities in the script. Similarly, S. Devasankar of Pinkvilla appreciated Dhanush’s directorial effort, particularly the modern twist he brought to the Tamil gangster genre, though he acknowledged that the film is more of a good one-time watch than a masterpiece.
Janani K of India Today was more critical, giving the film 2.5 out of 5 stars and pointing out the lack of emotional depth in the narrative. B. V. S. Prakash of Deccan Chronicle was even harsher, awarding only 2 stars and expressing disappointment that the film relied heavily on gore and violence without a strong plot to support it. Despite these criticisms, Latha Srinivasan of Hindustan Times found “Raayan” to be a compelling watch, praising the performances and unexpected story twists. Bhuvanesh Chandar of The Hindu, however, felt that while Dhanush showed promise as a director, the film ultimately fell short of its potential.
Box Office Performance
“Raayan” opened to strong box office numbers, grossing ₹23.75 crore worldwide on its first day, making it the second-highest opening for a Tamil film in 2024, behind “Indian 2.” The film continued its successful run, grossing ₹75.42 crore worldwide by the end of its first weekend. Within ten days, “Raayan” had earned ₹122.75 crore, and by the third weekend, its total collection stood at ₹109.50 crore in India and ₹149 crore worldwide. The film concluded its run with a final gross of over ₹152 crore, making it the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2024 and the highest-grossing A-rated Tamil film of all time. This success further cemented Dhanush’s status as a leading actor and a promising director in the Tamil film industry.
