Overview of Maestro (2021)
Maestro is a 2021 Telugu-language black comedy crime thriller directed by Merlapaka Gandhi. A remake of the acclaimed 2018 Hindi film Andhadhun, it features Nithiin, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Nabha Natesh in lead roles. The story revolves around Arun, a pianist who pretends to be blind to enhance his musical skills but soon finds himself caught up in a murder plot involving a former actor.
Production and Release
The production of Maestro began in December 2020, with filming taking place in Hyderabad, Goa, and Dubai. The COVID-19 pandemic caused delays, leading to a direct-to-streaming release on Disney+ Hotstar on 17 September 2021, bypassing a traditional theatrical release. The film’s music, composed by Mahati Swara Sagar, plays a significant role in setting the tone of the movie, with several singles released to promote the film.
Critical Reception
Maestro received a mixed response from critics and audiences alike. While some appreciated the performances, especially Nithiin’s portrayal of the protagonist and Tamannaah’s fresh take on her character, others felt the film lacked the edge and humor of the original Andhadhun. The changes made to suit Telugu sensibilities were seen by some as a positive, while others felt these tweaks diluted the film’s impact, making it a less thrilling and less morally ambiguous story compared to its predecessor.
