Featuring Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth as the main protagonists, the film boasts an ensemble supporting cast, including Vignesh, Livingston, Senthil, Jeevitha, K. S. Ravikumar, and Thambi Ramaiah. Plot

Set in the village of Murarbad, where Hindus and Muslims coexist peacefully, the film follows the lives of Thirunavukarasu “Thiru” and Shamsuddin, two talented cricket players. Their families share a strong bond despite their religious differences. However, local politicians exploit their rivalry, igniting communal tensions for electoral gain. A cricket match manipulated by Raj, a politician’s son, leads to Thiru injuring Shamsuddin, escalating the conflict. Amid personal and social struggles, Thiru redeems himself through cricket, earning funds to restore a temple cart confiscated during the unrest. The story culminates in Thiru saving Shamsuddin during a Bombay riot, mending their bond, and exposing Raj’s role in the violence. Harmony is restored as the Muslim community aids the Hindus in completing their festival.

Production Development and Casting

In October 2022, Lyca Productions signed Aishwarya Rajinikanth to direct a film for their two-deal agreement with Rajinikanth, following the success of 2.0 (2018). Rajinikanth’s extended cameo and Jeevitha’s return to acting after 33 years added to the film’s anticipation. The project was officially launched with a muhurat puja on 5 November 2022.

Filming

Principal photography began on 7 March 2023 in Chennai, with an initial puja held in December 2022. The team completed the first schedule in Chennai by April and moved to Mumbai for the second schedule in May, where Rajinikanth and former cricketer Kapil Dev joined the shoot. Subsequent schedules were filmed in Pondicherry, and by 12 July, Rajinikanth had completed his portions. Vishnu Vishal wrapped his scenes on 5 August, with filming concluding on 7 August 2023. During post-production, a hard disk containing 21 days of footage went missing, leading the team to reshoot key scenes to complete the final cut.

Music and Promotions

The film’s score and soundtrack were composed by A. R. Rahman, marking his first collaboration with Aishwarya Rajinikanth. In November 2023, Sony Music India acquired the audio rights for the film. The first single, “Ther Thiruvizha,” was released on 18 December 2023, followed by the second single, “Ae Pulla,” sung by Sid Sriram, on 15 January 2024, coinciding with Pongal. However, Sid Sriram was replaced by Nakul Abhyankar in the film version of the song. Notably, Rahman used artificial intelligence technology to recreate the voices of late singers Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed for the song “Thimiri Yezhuda,” making it the first Indian song to achieve this feat.

The audio launch was held on 26 January 2024 at the Sri Leo Muthu Indoor Stadium. Promotional activities included the release of the theatrical teaser on 12 November 2023, coinciding with Diwali, and a special promo highlighting Rajinikanth’s character, Moideen Bhai, on his birthday, 12 December 2023.

Release

Initially scheduled for release on 12 January 2024 to coincide with Pongal, the film’s release was postponed to 9 February 2024 to accommodate post-production delays and avoid clashing with Mission: Chapter 1 (2024).
