Plot (Short Summary)
Thugs of Hindostan is set in late 18th-century Hindustan. After the ruthless East India Company officer John Clive destroys the kingdom of Raunakpur and kills its king, the general Khudabaksh rescues the young princess Zafira and raises her to become a warrior. Years later, Khudabaksh—now known as Azaad—leads a rebel group of thugs fighting against the British.
Firangi Mallah, a clever but untrustworthy small-time thug, is hired by the East India Company to infiltrate Azaad’s group. Firangi joins the rebels by pretending to support them, gaining their trust, especially Zafira’s. However, he repeatedly struggles between loyalty and betrayal.
When Firangi betrays Azaad during a weapons deal, Azaad sacrifices himself to save his people—but survives and is captured by the British. Firangi, torn between greed and conscience, secretly works on a plan to free Azaad and the thugs.
In the final battle at an abandoned fort, Zafira kills Clive, ending his tyranny. With the kingdom liberated, Zafira becomes queen. Firangi escapes with Suraiyya and Shanichar on a stolen ship, leaving his future unknown.
