“Paheli,” a 2005 Indian Hindi-language fantasy film, is a unique tale narrated by puppets voiced by Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah. The story revolves around Lachchi (Rani Mukerji), a young Rajasthani village girl who enters into an arranged marriage with Kishanlal (Shah Rukh Khan), the workaholic son of a wealthy merchant. Soon after their wedding, Kishanlal leaves for a five-year business trip, leaving Lachchi behind. A ghost, captivated by Lachchi’s beauty, takes Kishanlal’s form and returns to the village, convincing everyone of his identity while revealing his true self only to Lachchi. This leads to a passionate and enchanting romance between Lachchi and the ghost, who fulfills her desires and dreams, unlike her real husband.
As the story unfolds, the ghost, masquerading as Kishanlal, integrates himself into Kishanlal’s family and the village, winning over everyone except the skeptical servant Bhoja (Rajpal Yadav). The ghost even restores the family’s honor by winning a camel race, further endearing himself to them. However, the real Kishanlal returns after four years, leading to confusion and a dramatic confrontation. To resolve the matter, the family consults an old shepherd, Gadariya (Amitabh Bachchan), who devises tests to identify the real Kishanlal. Ultimately, the ghost proves his love for Lachchi through an impossible feat, revealing his identity. Despite being trapped initially, the ghost escapes and possesses Kishanlal’s body, allowing Lachchi to live happily with both her real husband and her ghost lover.

Directed by Amol Palekar and produced by Juhi Chawla, Aziz Mirza, Sanjiv Chawla, and Shah Rukh Khan, “Paheli” is based on Vijayadan Detha’s Rajasthani short story and is a remake of the 1973 film “Duvidha” by Mani Kaul. The film, notable for its feminist perspective and magical realism, premiered at the 9th Zimbabwe International Film Festival and was India’s official entry to the 79th Academy Awards. Despite mixed reviews for its story and screenplay, “Paheli” was praised for its production design, cinematography, costumes, and special effects. It achieved moderate box office success and garnered accolades, including two Filmfare nominations and a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for Shreya Ghoshal’s performance in “Dheere Jalna.”
