Plot

Three grim reapers, Gang-rim, Haewonmak, and Lee Deok-choon, guide their 49th soul, Kim Soo-hong, through afterlife trials while the God of the House recovers their memories from 1,000 years ago.

Production

Both parts of Along With the Gods were shot simultaneously with a budget of ₩40 billion (around US$36.6 million). Dexter Studios created the visual effects, involving around 300 artists and technicians. Filming began on May 26, 2016, and ended on March 22, 2017. Chinese company Alpha Pictures invested $2.2 million.

Reception

Critical Response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 44% rating. Elizabeth Kerr of The Hollywood Reporter called it “a bigger, noisier, less focused slog,” while Noel Murray of Los Angeles Times noted its “awkwardly bloated” nature but acknowledged its overwhelming spectacle.

South Korea

The film set records for the highest pre-sale tickets and the largest opening day audience in South Korea. It quickly reached 10 million views and became the 13th most-watched film in South Korea’s history.

Hong Kong

The film achieved record-breaking pre-sales and first-week sales in Hong Kong.

Other Countries

It had the biggest opening week gross for any Korean film in North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
