Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024) – A High-Octane Sequel of Power and Revenge

Pushpa 2: The Rule is a 2024 Indian Telugu-language action drama film, directed by Sukumar and produced by Mythri Movie Makers in association with Sukumar Writings. This film is the much-awaited sequel to Pushpa: The Rise (2021), with Allu Arjun reprising his iconic role as Pushpa Raj. Alongside Arjun, the film stars Rashmika Mandanna, Fahadh Faasil, Jagapathi Babu, Dhananjaya, Rao Ramesh, Sunil, and Anasuya Bharadwaj. The sequel, officially announced prior to the original film’s release in December 2021, takes the story forward with a more intense and dramatic narrative. While 10% of the film’s footage was initially shot back-to-back with Pushpa: The Rise, Sukumar reworked the storyline, leading to the principal photography commencing in October 2022.

Made on a massive budget of ₹400–500 crore, Pushpa 2: The Rule is one of the most expensive Indian films and has a lengthy runtime of 200 minutes, making it one of the longest Indian films ever made. The film, which was released on December 5, 2024, in standard, IMAX, 4DX, D-Box, and PVR ICE formats, broke records on its opening day, grossing ₹270 crore worldwide, making it the highest-grossing Indian film on its first day. Critics lauded the film for Allu Arjun’s stellar performance, the gripping direction by Sukumar, and the film’s powerful soundtrack composed by Devi Sri Prasad. However, audiences in Kerala and Tamil Nadu had mixed reactions, particularly criticizing the runtime and Arjun’s performance, which had otherwise received praise.

The plot of Pushpa 2: The Rule picks up from the events of the first film, with a thrilling sequence where Pushpa is found in a red sandalwood shipment in Japan, triggering a flashback that takes the narrative deep into the smuggling world. Pushpa rises to power as a notorious smuggler, humiliating SP Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, who goes into hiding. However, Shekhawat’s plans to regain control by intercepting a massive sandalwood consignment lead to a cat-and-mouse game between the two. As Pushpa continues to build his criminal empire, plotting to make Sidhappa the Chief Minister, his ambitions take him to international waters, dealing with politicians and smugglers while navigating betrayal from his own syndicate members. The story intensifies with strategic moves and deceptive acts, where Pushpa outwits his rivals and manages to outsmart Shekhawat’s forces, even as personal tragedies unfold in his life.

The film also explores Pushpa’s relationship with his family, particularly with Srivalli, who is pregnant, and the deep emotional turmoil Pushpa faces when his niece is kidnapped. As the narrative twists with dangerous rivalries, tragic events, and shocking confrontations, the explosive climax sets the stage for the next chapter in the Pushpa saga, with a mysterious figure detonating a bomb at a family wedding, hinting at more chaos to come. Pushpa 2: The Rule establishes itself as a thrilling continuation of Pushpa Raj’s journey, full of action, drama, and powerful emotions.
