“Ayalaan,” a 2024 Tamil-language science fiction film, is written and directed by R. Ravikumar and produced by Kotapadi J. Rajesh under KJR Studios. Starring Sivakarthikeyan, Rakul Preet Singh, Sharad Kelkar, Isha Koppikar, and others, the movie follows a man and an alien teaming up to thwart a rogue scientist’s plan to create a deadly Nova gas that threatens Earth.
Initially announced by 24AM Studios in October 2016, KJR Studios took over, and filming began in June 2018, wrapping up in January 2021 with delays due to financial issues, Sivakarthikeyan’s commitments, and the COVID-19 pandemic. The predominantly Chennai-shot film, featuring music by A. R. Rahman, cinematography by Nirav Shah, and editing by Ruben, boasts over 4500 visual effects shots, a record for an Indian film.
Released on January 12, 2024, during Pongal (delayed from Diwali 2023), Ayalaan received positive reviews, grossing over ₹96 crore (US$12 million). It stands as the second highest-grossing Tamil film and one of the top-grossing Indian films of 2024. Post success, a sequel was announced.
