The journey to bring “Thangalaan” to the screen began several years before its release. Pa. Ranjith initially conceived the idea while working on his critically acclaimed film “Madras” in 2014. He pitched the concept to Vikram, but the project was delayed due to other commitments. The film finally gained momentum in 2021 and was produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja under Studio Green.
In December 2021, the film was officially announced under the tentative title “Chiyaan 61” since it marked Vikram’s 61st film as a lead actor. Initially, Anirudh Ravichander was approached to compose the music for the film, but G. V. Prakash Kumar eventually took on the role, making it his third collaboration with Vikram after “Deiva Thirumagal” (2011) and “Thaandavam” (2012).
Principal photography for “Thangalaan” began in October 2022 in Chennai and continued sporadically across several locations including Andhra Pradesh, Madurai, and Karnataka. Malavika Mohanan replaced Rashmika Mandanna as the female lead due to scheduling conflicts. To prepare for her role, Mohanan underwent extensive training in Silambam, a traditional Indian martial art. Filming also took place at the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka, which served as the backdrop for the story’s mining sequences.
The production faced some challenges, including a brief halt in filming after Vikram suffered a rib injury in May 2023. The shoot resumed in June, and by July 2023, principal photography had wrapped.

G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the film’s music and background score. The audio rights were acquired by Times Music for ₹5 crore (US$600,000). A behind-the-scenes video, featuring the theme “Thangalaan Exclusive Making Theme,” was released on Vikram’s birthday on 17 April 2023. Release and Distribution:
“Thangalaan” was released theatrically on 15 August 2024, coinciding with India’s Independence Day. The film was screened in standard, 3D, and EPIQ formats. Initially slated for a January 2024 release, the date was pushed back due to the producers’ interest in screening the film at international festivals.
Distribution rights were acquired by several regional distributors: KVN Productions for Karnataka, Sree Gokulam Movies for the Malayalam release, and Mythri Movie Makers for Telangana. Reception:

M Suganth from The Times of India gave the film 4/5 stars, appreciating the intense drama and arresting visuals. Rohit Panikker from Times Now also rated it 4/5, praising its cerebral storytelling and magical realism. However, Avinash Ravichandran from The Indian Express and Janani K from India Today were less impressed, both giving the film 2/5 stars, criticizing the screenplay and technical execution.
Box Office Performance:
Despite its grand scale and high expectations, “Thangalaan” underperformed at the box office. Made on a budget of ₹100-150 crore, the film grossed only ₹68 crore globally. After factoring in ancillary costs, the film incurred an estimated loss of ₹88 crore, making it one of the biggest box-office failures in Tamil cinema history.
