Anandham Vilayadum Veedu (2021): A Tamil Action-Drama
Plot Overview
“Anandham Vilayadum Veedu” (transl. Home filled with happiness) is a Tamil-language action drama film released in 2021, directed by Nandha Periyasamy. The film centers around Periya Aambalai, a patriarch with two families, and the complex relationships between his children. Gautham Karthik plays Sakthivel, the protagonist who works for his uncle Muthupandi (Cheran) in the family’s lorry business. The story revolves around family disputes triggered by jealousy and the scheming of Karuppan, a moneylender, who sows discord between Muthupandi’s half-brothers. Despite these conflicts, Muthupandi strives to keep the family united and oversee the construction of a new house for their large family, all while fending off Karuppan’s attempts to destroy them. The climax sees Sakthivel defeating Karuppan and the family ultimately uniting to live happily in their newly completed home.
Production
Initially planned as a spiritual successor to “Mayandi Kudumbathar” (2009), the project later evolved into a separate family drama titled “Anandham Vilayadum Veedu.” Directed by Nandha Periyasamy, the film stars Gautham Karthik and Cheran. The score and soundtrack were composed by Siddhu Kumar, featuring four songs.
Release
The film was released theatrically on December 24, 2021. Following its theatrical release, the streaming rights were acquired by ZEE5, while Zee Tamil and Zee Thirai secured the satellite rights.
Reception
The film opened to mixed reviews from critics. Ram Venkat Srikar of Cinema Express rated it 2.5/5, noting that although the film had heart, it lacked strong execution. Suganth from The Times of India echoed this sentiment, giving it 2/5 and criticizing its contrived writing and soap opera-like production. Sify similarly rated the film 2/5, calling it below average and primarily suited for audiences who enjoy TV dramas. Despite the criticism, some reviewers, like Bharat Kumar from News Today, praised director Nandha Periyasamy for the positive message at the film’s core.
