Critical Response
Baby John received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising the performances and action sequences but criticizing the film’s predictable narrative and uneven pacing.
A critic from Bollywood Hungama rated the film 3.5/5 stars, describing it as a “mass entertainer” that works due to its “clapworthy moments, Varun Dhawan’s energetic performance, and Salman Khan’s cameo.” The critic also noted that the film would benefit from the holiday season and minimal competition at the box office.
Aman Wadhwa of DNA India gave 3.5/5 stars, calling it “the perfect masala entertainer that Bollywood needed to round off a rather disappointing year.”
Chirag Sehgal of News 18 rated it 3/5 stars, acknowledging the commendable performances but criticizing the film for its “lackluster plot and uneven pacing.”
Sana Farzeen of India Today also gave it 3/5 stars, commenting that the film “could either benefit from the withdrawal symptoms fans are experiencing after Pushpa 2: The Rule or lose the battle to Allu Arjun’s mass-actioner.”
Lachmi Deb Roy of Firstpost rated it 3/5 stars, stating, “While Varun Dhawan does a good job as an action hero, Jackie Shroff steals the show, but Wamiqa Gabbi is hugely underused in the film.”
Rishil Jogani of Pinkvilla gave the film 2.5/5 stars, saying, “Baby John attempts to tackle a serious social issue but falls short due to its superficial treatment and over-reliance on overused narrative tropes. The action sequences and background score are commendable, but the film lacks innovation.”
Dhaval Roy of Times of India rated it 2.5/5 stars, highlighting Dhawan’s performance, which balances a dual role of a caring father and a fearless cop, but criticized the predictable narrative, stating, “The movie has its moments as an actioner, but it could have been more impactful in terms of content and storytelling.”
Tanmayi Savadi of Times Now echoed similar sentiments, rating it 2.5/5 stars and describing it as “a good attempt at fan service” but noting that it “offers nothing fresh or exciting.”
Kartik Bhardwaj of Cinema Express gave the film 2/5 stars, remarking, “Baby John feels like a feverishly hurried version of Theri. It doesn’t let the characters marinate and is too eager to get to the conflict.”
Aishwarya Vasudevan of OTT Play rated it 2/5 stars, stating, “Baby John tries to rock the cradle of Bollywood with South Indian masala but ends up crying over spilt milk.”
Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express gave the film 1/5 stars, calling it “a contender for the worst film of 2024, a year when big, starry Bollywood tanked well and truly.”
Rishabh Suri of Hindustan Times concluded, “Overall, there’s nothing much that makes Baby John stand out apart from the action. It’s watchable if you can sit through the boring songs and the atrocious first half hour.”
