Film Overview
“Indian 2” (also marketed as “Indian 2: Zero Tolerance”) is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language vigilante action film directed by S. Shankar. The script was co-written by B. Jeyamohan, Kabilan Vairamuthu, and Lakshmi Saravana Kumar. The film is jointly produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Movies. It is the second installment in the Indian trilogy and a sequel to “Indian” (1996). Kamal Haasan reprises his role as Senapathy, an ageing freedom fighter turned vigilante fighting against corruption, with an ensemble cast including Siddharth, S. J. Suryah, Rakul Preet Singh, Kajal Aggarwal, and others.
Plot Summary
The film occurs 28 years after its predecessor. Senapathy returns from abroad to aid Chitra Aravindhan and his team, who run a YouTube channel called “Barking Dogs,” focused on parodies and political satires. Following the death of a young woman caused by corrupt officials, the team launches a campaign titled “Come Back Indian,” urging Senapathy to return and combat corruption. Senapathy targets corrupt individuals in Gujarat and Odisha and encourages people to expose corruption peacefully while upholding the ideals of Subhas Chandra Bose.
Production History
The project was announced in September 2017, with Sri Venkateswara Creations initially onboard before Lyca Productions took over. Principal photography commenced in January 2019 and concluded in March 2024. Delays occurred due to a fatal accident in 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic. Red Giant Movies entered as co-producers to support the project. The technical crew includes musician Anirudh Ravichander, cinematographers Ravi Varman and R. Rathnavelu, editor A. Sreekar Prasad, production designer T. Muthuraj, and visual effects supervisor V. Srinivas Mohan.
Music and Soundtrack
Anirudh Ravichander composed the soundtrack album and background score, marking his first collaboration with director Shankar and his second with Kamal Haasan. The soundtrack was officially released on 1 June 2024. The audio rights were acquired by Sony Music India, and a promotional event was held in Chennai.
Marketing and Release
The final trailer was released on 25 June 2024 and received unfavorable responses, particularly criticizing Haasan’s makeup, Shankar’s direction, and the writing. Despite this, “Indian 2” was released worldwide on 12 July 2024 in standard and IMAX formats. The film is notable for being the first Indian film released in the 4DX format in Saudi Arabia.
Distribution and Box Office
The film’s distribution rights were acquired by various companies across India and overseas, including Asian Suresh Entertainment LLP, Sree Gokulam Movies, Romeo Pictures, and Pen Marudhar. The film grossed ₹50 crore on its opening day, the highest first-day gross for a Tamil film in 2024.
Critical Reception
“Indian 2” received negative reviews from critics, who compared it unfavorably to the original film. Critics highlighted the outdated writing and lack of emotional depth but praised Kamal Haasan’s performance. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported that only 22% of 9 critics’ reviews were positive.
Controversy
A case was filed against the makers seeking a ban on the film due to claims by Aasan Rajendran, who alleged that his Varma kalai techniques were used without permission.
Sequel
Plans for a sequel, “Indian 3,” were discussed in June 2023, with the film eventually being split into two parts due to its length. “Indian 3” is scheduled to release in January 2025. A glimpse of “Indian 3” was shown as a mid-credit scene in “Indian 2.”
